What will happen to the African students who have escaped the Ukraine conflict?

Desmond Chinaza Muokwudo, a 30-year-old Nigerian student who recently escaped Ukraine, has saved for an education in Europe for the past 11 years.

He dreamed of studying international relations as a pipeline welder from Anambra state, but he suffered with unemployment during the recession in 2016. He only managed to earn enough money to pursue his passion after his parents agreed to sell their tiny plot of property.

He eventually started university last year, and had only been in Ukraine for three months when Russia launched its full-scale invasion.
He claimed over the phone from his temporary lodging in Berlin, Germany, that "my parents have nothing left, they can't support me."

"My government simply urges me to return home, but there's a problem."

"My government simply urges me to return home, but there is nothing in Nigeria waiting for me."

Mr Muokwudo is one of an estimated 16,000 African students in Ukraine who are now scrambling to continue their education.
